THE Government wants to impose targets on doctors – as if they haven’t got enough work on their hands. Not surprisingly, Worcester’s New Labour MP is all in favour.

One of the problems with our rulers is they are stuck in a 1980sstyle management techniques timewarp. This was the era of clipboards, idiotic courses teaching lay psychology and all conducted in an atmosphere of testosterone tension. For the drones, it was all about as motivational as watching a video of Gordon Brown speeches on a wet Saturday night in Dines Green.

When politicians get into power they suddenly decide that they want to manage themselves. The memories of days following the electorate’s instructions rapidly evaporate as ample behinds settle into the sofas of Westminster.

However, they forget something – the targets that we have set them.

Targets such as solving the youth crime problem… protecting British jobs against globalisation… fighting for fairer education funding… bringing costly wars to a conclusion.

Before politicians start talking about targets for other people, they might like to ponder on a few we could set them. Right, Mike Foster?
