A CHILDREN’S author from Worcestershire is celebrating the release of her second book.

Talented writer and illustrator Helen Wendy Cooper will be touring the county in September and October with her new book Silly Samuel Square.

The book is the second in her series of Shape Land books and follows on from the success of her first Trevor Triangle Loses the Mail, which was released last year.

Miss Cooper, of Eardiston, near Tenbury Wells, said: “I’m really looking forward to going on tour again and reading to the children.

“I do a little workshop, which includes my story, a few songs and then a colouring activity. It’s always lots of fun and helping children learn is extremely rewarding.”

The books are aimed at pre-school children up to the age of five and try to help children learn and recognise different shapes, increase their pronunciation of harder shapes and also give them a funny story to read.

In this new story Samuel Square buys some roller blades and whizzes around Shape Land, causing lots of mischief and ends up getting stuck in a bin.

One by one his shaped friends attempt to pull him out, causing Samuel Square to finally have to learn some manners.

The 29-year-old author started writing at an early age and produced her first children’s book for her child development coursework at Bewdley High School.

She trained as a nursery nurse at Worcester College of Technology and studied writing while serving in the army.

During this time she wrote for many military publications but once her contract ended returned to child care and re-started her children’s books.

Miss Cooper is now a freelance writer for various magazines and also reviews children’s books for Troubador publications.

She has many ongoing writing projects but is hoping many more Shape Land books will be published.

Miss Cooper will be visiting book shops, first schools, nurseries and libraries in the next two months, and her first book signing will be at WH Smith book shop in Kidderminster on Saturday, September 6. She will be in Worcester’s WH Smith on the High Street on Saturday, September 20.

All signings will be held between 10am and 2pm.

The book is available to buy for £4.99 from WH Smith and online at amazon.co.uk, traffordbookstore.com and waterstones.com.
