THE discovery of the body of a newborn baby girl – most likely from Worcester – at a waste plant more than 100 miles away is awful.

We are sure the hearts of every reader go out not just to this poor mite but also to her mother, who must be in need of immediate care.

The baby’s body was found at the plant in Peterborough on Wednesday.

It now appears she arrived at the site via a waste sorting plant in Bromsgrove after being collected from bins in Worcester. It is a horrible tragedy.

What is now important is that the mother is found and provided with the help she will clearly need, both physically and mentally.

Police believe she may have hidden her pregnancy from family and friends. After giving birth possibly alone and frightened, she must have been in a dreadful state to then dump her dead child in the rubbish.

It is a scenario that is almost Dickensian and difficult to imagine in 21st-century Britain.

We are sure there will be some quick to condemn the mother’s actions. This newspaper will not be among them.

We would urge her to come forward.

She needs care, help and understanding.

No pub, but Tesco

WE are relieved Worcester’s former main post office in Foregate Street is not to become a pub. However, we wonder whether nearby traders will be quite so pleased with our revelation today that it has been bought by Tesco.

There may well be some disquiet at the retail giant’s plans to open one of its Express stores on the site.
