A SCHOOL in Kempsey, near Worcester, has protected itself against would-be thieves by using a revolutionary property marking system.

Kempsey Primary School has invested in SmartWater and marked all of its IT equipment and other valuables with the unique, irremovable liquid. Anything covered in SmartWater at the school can now be identified by a unique code.

PC John McLaren, SmartWater lead for south Worcestershire, said: “It is great news that Kemspey school is the first to realise the benefits of SmartWater and we hope more schools follow its lead.

“Schools can have valuable equipment and it is great that this equipment is marked, sending a clear message to criminals not to bother.”

The school’s headteacher Adrian Osbourne said: “We are extremely pleased to be involved with such a high quality, technical product. Using property marking will enhance the security of our equipment, equipment we have invested in for our pupils’ future.”

PC McLaren gave a short assembly to children at the school in Ellsdon last week explaining what SmartWater is and how it works. Pupils were all sent home with a leaflet to give to their parents detailing how the product can boost home security.

“The more people that mark their property, whether it be a TV, a piece of jewellery or a school electronic whiteboard, the more doors close to thieves,”

said PC McLaren.

“The chance of being burgled is very low in the area and we appreciate schools, and indeed householders, are struggling for extra cash.

“However, an investment in property marking could save far more in the long run if any property is stolen and the mere fact someone has SmartWater often deters thieves altogether.”

Hundreds of domestic packs have already been distributed to householders who have experienced crime as well as vulnerable people across the division.

Each school SmartWater pack contains enough solution for more than 700 items, a large ultra-violet light, and warning stickers to put on equipment, among other items.
