MORE than 100 people gathered to watch the unveiling of a sculpture depicting the arrival of a pilgrim father from Droitwich in America.

The new bronze statue of Edward Winslow was unveiled during a special ceremony in St Andrew’s Square shopping centre on Sunday afternoon.

The choir of St Peter’s Church of England First School sang a number of celebratory pieces before the the chairman of the Local Area Partnership Pam Davey, the Mayor of Droitwich Councillor Glenise Noyes, and chairman of Wychavon District Council Councillor Jo Sandells unveiled the work created by Sara Ingleby-Mackenzie, who also said a few words.

Coun Davey said: “The choir was excellent and much appreciated by everyone.

“It was great to have the opportunity to hear, first hand, from the sculptress of her thoughts when creating this splendid new feature for our historic town.

“The partnership is very grateful for all those who helped make this a most enjoyable event.”

Edward Winslow was born in Droitwich in 1595 and was baptised in St Peter’s Church.

The son of a local salt trader was one of the pilgrim fathers who left England in 1620 to sail to America on the Mayflower before founding the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The sculpture is set upon a granite block and there is also a simple descriptive plaque.
