THE headteacher of a struggling school which is in special measures has resigned from his post.

Alex Wall, headteacher of Simon De Montfort Middle School, Evesham, stepped down on Tuesday.

The move follows a highly critical Ofsted report which revealed the school was not improving and in a “precarious position”.

Caroline Browne, headteacher of Evesham High School, has taken over as executive headteacher with immediate effect.

Mr Wall started at the 486-pupil school last September and said he was ready to rescue it.

But he has not been able to turn the school around, with the latest monitoring inspection by Ofsted showing standards had dropped from a satisfactory grade to inadequate.

Ray Westwood, senior adviser for Worcestershire Local Education Authority, said: “Governors at Simon De Montfort Middle School on Tuesday night accepted the resignation of their headteacher Alex Wall.

“Governors thank Mr Wall for his efforts in the short time that he had been at the school.

“With the support of the local authority, they then discussed and approved a proposal that Caroline Browne, headteacher at Evesham High School, would take over as executive headteacher.

“This is not on a permanent basis but until the school is removed from Ofsted’s special measures category.

“Governors at Evesham High School met later in the evening and also gave their approval for this to happen.

“Virtually all pupils at Simon De Montfort transfer to Evesham High School at the end of year eight. This arrangement has the full support of the new director of children’s services and local members.”

Spokeswoman for Worcestershire County Council Sanina Kaur said: “We will continue to work closely with the school to ensure the transfer from the existing headteacher to the new executive headteacher is carried out as smoothly and effectively as possible with as minimum disruption to the pupils and staff.”
