WALKERS are being asked to put themselves in the shoes of disadvantaged Africans when they step out for charity.

Organisers want this year’s Walk for Water to be the most successful ever after raising more than £4,000 for Samaritan’s Purse last year.

The four-mile sponsored walk is as much a gesture of solidarity as it is a fund-raiser to give disadvantaged people access to clean drinking water in Africa, according to Brian Hatfield, event organiser.

Mr Hatfield has been tirelessly spreading the message in churches and Worcester schools of how just £40 can buy a water filter which can provide for a family for years.

“We’ll use the money to buy water filters, dig wells and boreholes,” he said.

“I want as many people as possible to come and join us this year.

“Last time around we had a woman in her 70s who had a hip replacement and Parkinson’s Disease. She raised more than £200.”

He explained the four- mile walk represented the average distance women and children walk in Africa to get fresh clean water. They then have to travel the four miles back to their homes, carrying the water.

Mr Hatfield, who has worked for the charity for six years, urged people to step up and take part in the event which is from 11am at Worcester Racecourse on Saturday, May 30.
