EIGHT pupils from Baxter Business and Enterprise College visited the University of Worcester to meet entrepreneurs completing two special courses.

The day, hosted by Andrew Corcoran – knowledge transfer manager at the university, aimed to give both the school and university students the opportunity to network and discuss their business ideas and experiences.

The university students are completing student placements for Entrepreneurs in Education (SPEED) and Enterprise Fellowship Scheme (EFS) courses, which are funded by the Government and European Union to help graduate entrepreneurs develop their own businesses.

Prospective students present their ideas to a selection panel and those chosen receive training, coaching, mentoring, networking, promotional and funding support to develop their fledgling businesses.

The pupils, from years 7 to 11 from Baxter College, make up the school’s Young Chamber council.

Young Chamber is a national project linking schools and businesses through local chambers of commerce to allow students to voice their opinions, participate in enterprise activities and gain experience and knowledge of the world of work.

University student Catherine Griffiths, founder of UWR Radio, is getting a student radio created by students for students up and running at the university.

Baxter College was especially interested in her knowledge and experiences as it is hoping to apply for a community radio licence on behalf of the school.

The Young Chamber council is now producing a report and business plan for the headteacher to request the school’s own radio equipment.

Following the visit, it is hoped students from Baxter may be able to have more involvement with future events and activities at the university.
