The Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Rev Dr John Inge, said his thoughts and prayers were with the family. He said: “I was desperately sad to learn of the shocking news of Tony Ballard’s death.

“Tony was known as a generous-hearted boy who loved life and lived it to the full. The fact that his life has been cut so tragically short is dreadful.

“We commend Tony to God in Jesus and we pray that all those who are devastated by this news will be given strength and courage.”

Tony was studying at Worcester College of Technology.

Principal Chris Morecroft said: “Staff and students at the college are both shocked and saddened to hear about the tragic news about Tony. He was a popular member of his public services group and clearly enjoyed life.

“He had just successfully completed his course and, due to his keen interest in drumming, he was due to start a course in music technology in the autumn. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family and friends at this time.” Tony previously attended Bishop Perowne CE College in Merriman’s Hill Road, where his father is the school chaplin. Headteacher Julie Farr said he was a popular and well-liked pupil.

She said he was loved by everyone and they were in shock at the terrible news.
