A WOMAN has been airlifted and a man taken by ambulance to hospital after a two car crash in Worcestershire.

The crash happened at about 5pm yesterday on the A448 between Mustow Green and Kidderminster at Stone.

Two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, an incident support officer, a BASICS Emergency Doctor and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The two cars, which each had a single occupant, had both suffered extensive front end damage.

“Because the air ambulance was not able to land beside the incident, firefighters assisted ambulance staff carrying her the 100 yards to the helicopter including passing her over a locked gate.

“This was an example of excellent joint working between fire and ambulance staff which ensured both patients were taken to hospital as quickly as possible.”

Police have appealed for witnesses and information follwing the incident.

The driver of the Peugeot, a woman from the Kidderminster area in her 70s, was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, with multiple injuries including a broken leg, hip and arm. She remains in hospital.

The driver of the Astra, a man also from the Kidderminster area, was taken by ambulance to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital with head and crush injuries. He remains there and is believed to be in a stable condition.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles for about 45 minutes following the collision and were cut free by the Fire Service, assisted by ambulance crews.

The A448 was closed in both directions with road blocks in place at the Spennells Valley and Mustow Green islands and at the junction with Stanklyn Lane. The road was reopened at about 9pm.

PC Gerwyn Dury of West Mercia Police said: “This was a serious incident and although we have spoken to some witnesses we know that others left the scene before our officers arrived.

“It is important we establish exactly what happened and we would appeal to anyone who saw the collision or noticed either of the vehicles beforehand to get in touch with us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the PC Dury at Kidderminster Police Station on 0300 333 3000.
