A WIFE badly injured in an alleged murder plot told a jury her husband wanted to take out another insurance policy on her life just days before she was hit by a speeding car.

Chloe Hollins said they had already cashed in one policy for £8,000 to help pay off mounting debts.

But Michael Hollins put her under pressure for more insurance.

When she refused he became “really annoyed”.

The prosection allege debt-ridden businessman Hollins wanted to kill his wife and collect a £500,000 insurance payout to fund other romances.

It is claimed he obtained a Land Rover Discovery and staged an accident in a country lane near the couple’s home in Tower Road, Breinton, Hereford.

Mother-of-two Mrs Holl-ins was struck by the vehicle and suffered two fractures of her pelvis, a broken leg and internal injuries, spending nearly a month in hospital. Pros-ecutor Andrew Lockhart alleged the driver was either Hollins or a hired hitman.

Hollins, aged 40, now of Grange Road, Northamp-ton, denies attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police informed his wife that her husband had a secret family in Scotland and a string of lovers, Worcester Crown Court was told.

She said he bought flats for rent and got involved in two bed and breakfast properties.

Her father lent them £10,000 and Hollins took out a mortgage on his own father’s home.

Hollins was blacklisted by a bank and a plan to build six homes on another property failed.

Mrs Hollins said: “Our finances were dire and I was really worried. I felt awful that we had all these mortgages and no way of paying them.

“Things became very tense because of the financial stress.”

Police found Hollins had obtained the Land Rover in St Albans – but kept it a secret, the jury heard.

A missing headlight was discovered in the boot of the abandoned vehicle with his blood on it.

Shell from eggs Mrs Hollins had been carry- ing when she was injured were found in a wheel arch.

The trial continues.
