THE son of Worcester’s former mayor has been found guilty of stealing electrical goods and spitting at a police officer.

Azad Hussain, aged 25, was accused of stealing £490 worth of items from a house in Worcester where he had been collecting rent in March.

Hussain - son of Coun Allah Ditta - was found guilty in his absence at trial in August, when instead of waiting for a ruling on an adjournment to the case he simply left Worcester Magistrates Court building.

In May he spat in the face of a police officer but denied the charge. He failed to attend that trial date at magistrates on Wednesday, September 9, and was again found guilty in his absence and of breaching his bail.

Hussain, of Richmond Road, off Wyld's Lane, Worcester, had been arrested on warrant spending five days in jail but was released on bail with the help of a £2,000 surety put up by his sister.

There was dispute over a letter sent to Hussain asking him to meet with probation officers after his release, ahead of sentencing for the offences at Worcester Magistrates Court.

Sam Lamsdale, representing Hussain, said neither he nor his family “had seen any correspondence from the probation service.”

District Judge Bruce Morgan agreed to adjourn sentencing and Hussain will re-appear at magistrates for sentencing on Thursday, October 22.
