A LOCAL beer has been renamed to honour Worcestershire troops returning from Afghanistan.

When the Willoughby Brewery Company in Whitbourne advertised it was looking for a new name, the mother of a serving soldier contacted company director Andrew McCullam.

The former Grenadier Guards officer has now re-named a beer Peace Keeper and bottles will be presented to Territorial Army soldiers from Normandy Company 4 Mercian when they return from active service in Afghanistan today.

“Our Armed Forces work hard in our name and this is a way in which we can all show our support,” said Mr McCullam.

“Ten pence from the sale of each bottle and pint of Peace Keeper will be donated to Help for Heroes to support the vital work they do in support of our injured troops.”

The soldiers from 4 Mercian have spent the last six months protecting Camp Bastion in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province and during the summer were involved in Operation Panthers Claw.

They also provided armed escorts to medics flying into the battle zone to retrieve injured soldiers and bomb disposal teams.

The 93 troops will arrive at the TA centre in Wolverhampton and will spend time in Cornwall before returning to their home towns next week.
