A SUPERMARKET delivery driver has avoided a road ban after being stopped for having no insurance.

Ian May, aged 32, was pulled over in St Swithin’s Street, Worcester city centre, when a police patrol ran a check on his vehicle.

May, of Victoria Street, Barbourne told officers he had “just bought the vehicle,” according to Sallie Hewitt, prosecuting, and that his current policy covered him to drive other cars he did not own.

He then explained to officers that although he “did not own the car, he was not its registered keeper and thought he could drive it.”

Further roadside checks showed May had been banned from driving for six months after infringements in 2007.

By the time he was stopped on Thursday, November 13, last year, he had served that ban.

“He told officers he had never re-applied for his licence,” added Miss Hewitt.

May, a delivery driver for Sainsbury’s, in Blackpole, told district judge Bruce Morgan he “needed his licence” to keep his job.

He was given six penalty points for driving while uninsured and fined £220.

For driving without a licence he was fined £50 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
