AN INDIAN extravaganza with exotic food and dance raised thousands of pounds for the breast unit campaign.

The weekend event at the home of GP Dr Stuart King and his wife June raised £4,750 for the Worcester News-backed Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.

About 120 people attended on Saturday and 110 people on Sunday for the fund-raiser at their home in Old Road North in Kempsey, near Worcester.

The cheque was gratefully received by Rachel Bright Thomas, a consultant breast surgeon at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

Mrs King, who is a patron of the campaign, said: “This proved a very successful event with Indian food, a dancing display, music, a bouncy castle, swimming and stalls with a request for a repeat next year.”

The couple have provided support to help improve services and facilities at the hospital before, raising £10,000 for the Charles Hastings Education Centre, designed as a state-of-the-art facility for the education and training of healthcare staff in Worcestershire. Your Worcester News has adopted the campaign to create a new breast unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

The existing facilities are cramped and too spread out within the hospital and campaign leaders want a dedicated unit to make life easier for patients and staff. The campaign, launched last week, needs £2.5 million to convert an existing building at 220 Newtown Road on the grounds of the main hospital, near the Charles Hastings Education Centre.

Campaign leaders hope work on converting the building can start within 18 months and the project finished within three years.
