A DRIVER had to crawl from the wreckage of his car and was rushed to hospital following a crash which sent one car spinning and left another lodged in a hedge.

As first reported yesterday, the accident happened between a silver Mitsubishi and a blue Volkswagen Golf TDI on the A443 Hallow Road between Hallow and Holt Heath, near Worcester, at 9am yesterday.

Ambulance crews from the West Midlands Service NHS Trust took the driver of the Golf to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

A witness said the Mitsubishi was travelling south from the Holt Health direction when it was in collision with the Golf travelling from Worcester.

Andy Higgins, aged 26, of Dudley, was driving towards Worcester, where he works for your Worcester News, when he witnessed the accident.

He said: “The Mitsubishi driver seemed to lose control of the car and the cars flew off in different directions. The Golf was in a spin and the 4x4 went into the bush.

“I helped to carry the driver of the Golf away from the car. The back end of the car was smoking and the man was bleeding. There was blood all over my hands and he was complaining of back pain.

“He managed to get out of the car himself but he wasn’t on his feet. He crawled out of the car.”

The Golf was damaged on the driver’s side from the impact and the air bag had been deployed.

The Mitsubishi looked to have suffered less damage but it was difficult to see the front because it was concealed inside the hedge.

Mother-of-three Debbie Derby, aged 40, who owns the hedge, did not see the crash but was in the process of taking her children to school when she noticed the queue of traffic.

She said: “This hedge has been patched up so many times. About eight cars hit it last year and six cars in January alone came through the hedge or crashed on this corner because of frost. We have horses and sheep through there. We have had to put the animals in another field and if they get out that would cause more hassle.”

Police officers directed traffic because the road was partially blocked by the Golf, causing slight delays. It was fully re-opened at about 10.30am.
