WEST Mercia Police has been named as one of the top 50 places where woman want to work.

The force was selected as one of 50 employers who made it into The Times’ list for 2009.

The annual list recognises UK organisations with more than 1,000 employees and/or global brands which most effectively recruit top female talent, retain and develop female employees and can show they have a number of successful and inspirational female role models.

Chief Superintendent Jane Horwood, commander responsible for policing south Worcestershire and chairman of the force’s Women’s Network, lead the application.

“I am absolutely delighted with the news,” she said. “So much goes on in West Mercia to support and develop its female employees and it is great that all of the hard work has been recognised.

“I have worked for the force for more than 30 years and have seen a lot of changes as well as many achievements regarding female employees.

“On a daily basis 685 women officers tackle criminal, carry firearms, drive response cars, examine crime scenes and deal with anti-social behaviour.

“Policing is not just about police officers and although there are more female officers patrolling the streets than ever before, 44 per cent of all officers and staff are women.

“This busts the myth that policing is male dominated and proves gender is definitely high on the agenda for West Mercia.”
