A WORCESTERSHIRE man became a first-time father and an uncle within the space of two hours – and both babies were born premature.

Gavin Smith, of Langland Avenue, Malvern, was “overwhelmed with emotion” as his partner Hayley Jenkins gave birth to their baby while on holiday in Weymouth, Dorset. She had a caesarean section seven months into her pregnancy after contracting a potentially deadly kidney infection.

Meanwhile, in Worcester another member of the Smith family was bringing new life into the world. Mr Smith’s sister Lucy, of Jamaica Road, Malvern, and her partner Jon Eacock celebrated the arrival of baby Mia five weeks prematurely at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Mr Smith’s and Miss Jenkins’ baby Morgan Smith was born at 6.31pm on Monday, September 7, while his little cousin came into the world at 8.33pm.

Mr Smith said: “We were miles away from home and I was being told my girlfriend might not pull through and the baby was two months premature. It was very scary and emotional.”

Miss Jenkins had emergency surgery and was given medication to deal with her infection.

Mr Smith said: “It’s something special to be an uncle and a dad on the same day.”

Morgan is still at hospital having picked up an infection but is doing well and is expected out with a week or two, while Mia was fine to be taken home within days. Mr Smith said: “It will be nice that they get to go to the same school and will be quite close to each other.”
