A MAN has died after a car and a lorry crashed in Herefordshire.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the A49 at Marlbrook, near Leominster, shortly after 6.20am today where a Renault Megane Scenic was in "significant collision" with a DAF articulated heavy goods vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The 28-year old male driver of the Renault was initially trapped in his overturned vehicle. He suffered multiple injuries.

An ambulance spokesman said doctors and firefighters worked quickly to release him from the car and tried to save his life at the scene.

He said: "The man was transferred by land ambulance on blue lights to Hereford County Hospital whilst crews continued resuscitation efforts on route.

"Medics were prealerted to the arrival of the man who was in a critical condition.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of crews, doctors and hospital medics nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital."

The male driver of the HGV escaped injury.

The A49 is still closed as police collision investigators examine the scene to determine the cause of the accident. The road is expected to re-open around 2pm.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have seen the vehicles before the crash. Anyone with information should contact PC Steve Broom from the Roads Policing Team at Hereford Police Station on 0300 3333000 as soon as possible.
