YOUNG people with learning difficulties have been taking part in a unique conference.

A total of 21 youngsters, aged between five and 21, were nominated by their schools to take part in Worcestershire County Cou- ncil’s Child’s Voice conference.

The event, subtitled Communication Hear by Right, gave them the opportunity to share their views with the people who provide children’s services.

They were also involved in the production of a DVD about the conference.

Jan Stoney, Child’s Voice project manager for the council, said: “It was an absolute privilege to work with all of the children and young people, listen to their stories and value their views, both at the conference and on the DVD.

“They are an inspiration for professionals across Worcester-shire to celebrate, reflect on and develop their practice to enable all young people to achieve success, regardless of their diverse needs.”

Nunnery Wood High School student Charlotte Pickett, aged 15, is just one of the youngsters featured in the Our Stories DVD.

She was in year two at primary school when teachers first noticed she was struggling to hear in class. After undergoing tests and operations Charlotte had two bone anchored hearing aids fitted.

She said: “I now attend Deaf Direct, a group that helps young people with hearing loss to socialise and interact with each other.

“As a result of this I had the confidence to join two youth clubs that have developed my social skills with other people.

“It has been an amazing experience coming together with other young people who have disabilities. I am looking forward to next year’s conference."
