NESTLED among the various eateries on Friar Street, Worcester, is a charming Chinese delight. It’s been a while since I’ve dined at Chung Ying Garden but I have always been impressed with its top-notch food, friendly, efficient service and relaxed ambience.

On a cold, wintry evening, the intimate restaurant, with its understated, tasteful decor, was a welcome relief from the seasonal chill.

The ample menu had an attractive choice of set meals and more than 30 recommended dishes.

My dining companion, a vegetarian, felt there could have been a few more options but a glass of pinot grigio and a couple of munches on some crisp prawn crackers soon calmed her and we decided to order.

We both plumped for soup to start.

My friend declared her mixed vegetable soup (£2.50), light, not too salty, packed full of “lovely vegetables, the perfect starter”.

My seafood soup (£3.50) was quite a catch – brim-full of moist, tender seafood – just right.

For mains, my pal plumped for satay mixed veg chow mein (£6).

She declared the satay flavour, subtle with a real kick. Having eaten some greasy satay dishes elsewhere, she was pleased it was the opposite, though maybe on this occasion a tad dry.

My king prawns in spicy satay sauce (£9.20) with boiled rice (£2.50) were a sizzling sensation; truly flavoursome, the succulent prawns, presented with their tails on, complemented well by the spicy sauce.

By now we had drained the bottle of plonk, Matra Hill Hungarian Pinot Grigio (£12.50) and under strict instructions from our food editor, ordered dessert.

The ice-cream was scrumptious. My honey and ginger dish was a sumptuous combination, while my friend said her coconut and pineapple (both £3.50) was bursting with flavour, packed full of creamy coconut.”

All in all, a great night’s dining.

Friendly, discreet but attentive service, good food and a nice unhurried feel.

Despite my friend’s misgivings about the vegetarian choice, she was very content with her food and vowed to return.

After another of glass of wine for the road, it was time to brave the elements once again, but we’ll be back.
