BRITISH music from the 20th and 21st centuries will be featured by the Avon Singers at their concert in St Peter's Church, Bengeworth, Evesham, on Saturday, November 12, and on Remembrance weekend, proceeds will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

The first half will include music by John Rutter and Andrew Lloyd Webber and an arrangement of Morning Has Broken.

There will also be music from The Magic Flutes, a trio of flautists who will perform their version of Bach's Brandenberg Concerto No 3.

After the interval comes the first local performance of The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.

"This piece, sub-titled A Mass for Peace, was commissioned for the millennium by the Royal Armouries Museum and lasts for about one hour," said Richard Sharp.

"It is in 13 sections and the words are widely drawn from spiritual and cultural sources reflecting the universal horror of war. It forms a broad narrative, concluding with a joyful prospect of peace finally prevailing Ring in the 100 years of Peace."

The singers will be supported by percussionists, cello, flute, keyboard and organ and Mr Sharp said the singers were greatly assisted by financial support from Cox & Hodgetts, Evesham solicitors, and Sheikh's Restaurant, of Broadway.

"This is currently the most popular composition on Classic FM and the music of Karl Jenkins will be known to everybody, even if the name is unfamiliar, due to his television work," Mr Sharp said.

The concert starts at 7.30pm, tickets cost £6 on 01386 870231 or on the door.
