HAVING read so much in the Shuttle/Times and News about tenor Russell Painter, baritone Jonathan Darby and pianist David Morgan, it was wonderful to finally hear them.

And what a superb idea it was to have three of Kidderminster's finest musicians on stage together in this summer concert organised by the Classical Music Society.

This was an evening full of highlights but, for sheer beauty and passion, the Jonathan and Russell duet Au Fonds du Temple Saint from Bizet's Pearl Fishers, took some beating.

Individually, Jonathan stole the show with his Ol Man River from Showboat and his fantastic Mr Cellophane from Chicago, where he showed his wide vocal range and a fine acting ability.

Not to be outdone, however, Russell's Bring Him Home from Les Miserables was faultless as was his Anthem from Chess.

The duets were also superb and here both showed they are not only talented singers but can also act. Their version of Gendarmes by Offenbach had the audience in stitches as did Pore Jud is Daid from Oklahoma! Both singers seemed particularly good at acting drunk which may explain their enjoyment of a well-deserved pint at the end of the night.

David Morgan on piano provided superb accompaniment for the evening and his deft fingers kept the pace going well. His individual items - Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith and Debussy's Bruyeres - showed he has a great range of playing ability and were a perfect complement to the songs.

Apparently all three of the artistes enjoyed the evening so much that they want to repeat it again next year so, if you missed this one, make sure you catch it next time. You will be in forreal musical treat. AG
