Review: Howard Jones in concert at the Huntingdon Hall, Worcester (Friday)

ONE of the godfathers of electronic music, Howard Jones' appearance was in atmospheric surroundings equally matched by the 80s icon playing an acoustic set on piano and accompanied by the superb Robin Boult on guitars.

The consummate musician and writer performed a mix of his popular songs such as his second chart hit What Is Love?, and a selection of new and more recent numbers from his latest album.

There was a personal feel to the evening with HJ chatting to the audience between songs and recounting stories of his concerts, the videos and a few words about the songs themselves.

The two musicians complemented each other well, adding to the relaxed and happy nature of the gig. The music and songs reflected a striving theme, never to give up, something HJ never did - being a late starter in the music industry and this is told through his music.

It was good to hear some of the songs being sung as remembered, with nothing lost.

After years of electronic music HJ changed from the synth and first embarked on The Acoustic Tour in 1996.

With the new material he is producing, it still proves he remains a talented writer and performer ageing well and still popular since his first single release back in 1983.

The concert proved how good some of the music was back then and his first appearance was fully appreciated by an enthusiastic audience.
