A COUNCILLOR has been taken to task over claims he lives in Claines when he has been living in St John's, Worcester, for the last 18 months. Alex Kear, who represents the Claines ward, was quoted in the Worcester News last Saturday saying he lives in the village of Claines.

However, Barbourne resident Bob Campbell, who plans to stand against Coun Kear in the ward in May's city council elections, pointed out that Coun Kear has been living in St John's.

But Coun Kear has countered by saying that as of noon on Friday, March 31, he had lived at Gilmour Crescent - in Claines.

"I was surprised to read your news items and features on Coun Alex Kear, in which he states that he lives in Claines," Mr Campbell said.

"My understanding is that he has been living in St John's and I feel he should apologise for misleading the public.

"Mind you, I understand he is moving back to Claines just in time for the election campaign."

Mr Campbell, who lives in Sandy Road, added: "I'm not saying he has to live in Claines to represent the people, because I live in Barbourne.

"That's not the issue. I think he's a nice guy, but it is a bit naughty to say he has lived in Claines all his life when he did move out."

In response, Coun Kear said: "As of midday on Friday, March 31, I moved back into Claines. "My family has been there 60 years and I still consider it home.

"I moved out for 18 months because I couldn't afford to stay. Perhaps that is something the Govern-ment is to blame for.

"I don't think it's fair for me to receive criticism. I think I was misquoted and I want to make it quite clear I am moving back to the area."
