BOARD game chiefs have decided Worcester is "too posh" for just one Mayfair square on its new unique Monopoly board.

The Worcester News asked readers to vote for the local landmark they felt deserved to be on the most expensive square on the game board - traditionally Mayfair.

Monopoly chiefs were so overwhelmed with the response, they are considering giving three Worcester locations equal treatment when the special city version of the game comes out in October.

Worcestershire County Cricket Ground, the Guildhall and the Cathedral may all be awarded dark blue squares worth £400.

A spokesman for Winning Moves UK, which is making Monopoly Worcester, said: "The city is awash with jewel-in-the-crown landmarks and we can't split which thrilling three should occupy the top spot on the new board.

"We have been overwhelmed with nominations for Mayfair from Worcester News readers and residents e-mailing in and so may have to create three of the squares in a unique tribute to the city."

It was Worcestershire County Cricket Ground which most surprised the game's makers.

The New Road ground was originally destined to occupy a mid-range square, but after the makers were deluged with votes, it has now been upgraded.

Club chief executive Mark Newton said: "We are delighted to be awarded a top square on the board as a result of votes.

"We are also absolutely ecstatic to discover that we had been upgraded due to the level of support that New Road received.

"We were advised by Winning Moves that the reaction of our supporters had far outweighed their expectations and highlights what an important landmark New Road is to Worcestershire."

The need for more `upmarket' squares was also evident in the lack of nominees for squares at the lower end of the market.

"We had real difficulty trying to find people to nominate places for Old Kent Road - so we've cancelled it," said the spokesman.

"We have been captivated by the city in terms of its beauty and charm and feel it would be more appropriate to have more exclusive squares on the board. It is just too posh."
