SPEEDING drivers are endangering the safety of children and parents outside a Worcestershire school, a headteacher has warned.

Mari Jones, of Ombersley Endowed First School, said drivers often ignore 30mph signs until its too late as they enter the village.

About 70 per cent of children coming from outside the village, near Droitwich, and many parents drop off and pick up their children by car but are risking accidents as they slow down to turn into the school.

Mrs Jones, who has been in charge of the school since September, said the problem came to a head when she sent a questionnaire to parents.

She said: "The speed of traffic was the overwhelming concern of parents.

"There is a 30mph sign but it doesn't give enough warning before the school and often drivers haven't slowed down by the time they pass us.

"The school is on the main route through from Kidderminster to Droitwich and we get a lot of heavy goods vehicles speeding through here."

Mrs Jones said she asked highways authorities to look into providing flashing speed signs and moving the 30mph sign further from the school.

Jon Fraser, Worcestershire Highways network control manager, said he would liaise with police to see if there were ways speed limits could be enforced more rigorously.

He said: "We've got a mobile variable speed flashing sign and we'll look at putting that outside the school.

"Even if we wanted to move the 30mph sign just 50 yards, it requires a legal order and a long period of consultation.

"It's not impossible but would take a minimum of six months, and even then, if people are not taking particular notice of it now, would it have much of an effect if it was moved? There isn't an easy solution."
