A LIFETIME'S collection of hundreds of children's books have been donated to the University of Worcester by a vicar from Cornwall.

The collection of more than 400 books, periodicals and articles, written by the renowned author George Alfred Henty, was donated by the Reverend ABE Brown and will be officially known as the Brown Collection.

Rev Brown said he felt the university's specialist Children's Literature Centre was the most fitting place to loan the collection permanently.

He said: "During more than half a century, my hobby has been collecting books by George Alfred Henty.

"I could never have imagined that it would culminate in an occasion like this.

"I'm delighted that this collection will now be based in a specialist children's centre."

Professor Jean Webb, of the University of Worcester, said he was extremely grateful.

He said: "The collection reflects current research at the university, and in the area of children's literature is of international interest."

Henty was a journalist

during the reign of Queen Victoria and, after an eventful career as a war correspondent turned his hand to writing historical adventure stories for children.
