A BID to save the Malvern-based English Symphony Orchestra from closure due to lack of funds could succeed with the help of music lovers.

Tomorrow's concert at Malvern Theatres, originally planned as a 25th anniversary celebration, now marks the start of a campaign to save the cash-strapped orchestra.

Artistic director and conductor William Boughton and distinguished soloists Craig Ogden (guitar), Raphael Wallfisch (cello), Phillipe Graffin (violin) and Jeremy Menuhin (piano) have waived their fees for the programme, which will include Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Elgar's Serenade for Strings and Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture.

ESO chairman Sebastian Parsons billed it as a real chance for the orchestra to be reborn.

He said: "If we can show enough support for the ESO and a determination for the orchestra to survive, there is every hope we can continue."

Star violinist Nigel Kennedy, who has a home in West Malvern, has also lent his support to the ESO's £20,000 bid for survival by offering to perform for free at a fund-raising concert.

General manager Alison King said: "He made this fantastically generous offer, but unfortunately we have not been able to find a venue that is available at this short notice on the few dates in May when he can be in the UK. We very much hope he will have a diary date later in the year."

Tickets for Friday's concert, at 7.30pm, cost £10 to £28 from the box office on 01684 892277.
