Concerned locals turned out in force for a meeting which gave the go-ahead for controversial housing plans.

Applications were submitted by QinetiQ for 28 homes behind Court Road and a further 28 next to the company's main entrance on St Andrew's Road, Malvern.

Frank Harriss, of St Andrew's Road, outlined residents' fears before the district council's southern area development control committee on Wednesday (June 15).

"We're not totally against the development but we're concerned about the height of the buildings, traffic conditions, footpaths and trees," he said. "We also think 24 houses would be better than 28."

Mr Harriss said he was concerned that buildings would overshadow bungalows on Fraser Close.

"Residents asked for bungalows and they got one-and-a-half storey houses, these could be easily changed," he said. "We also think more parking spaces are needed. One-and-a-half spaces per house is not enough."

The outline plans were approved with conditions including a restriction on the height of the buildings. These will be a mix of detached, semi-detached and flats. Half could be "affordable" homes.

Traffic lights will also be required at the junction of Court Road, Thirlstane Road and St Andrew's Road.

Development control manager David Murray said officers were satisfied with the density and character the housing and believed parking was sufficient.

QinetiQ's Matthew Fox said the plans were drawn up after a series of meetings and consultation with residents and planning officers.

Committee chairman John Tretheway said: "This is an opportunity for good design, which could really enhance the area."
