A KIDDERMINSTER golfer has shown his appreciation to a charity that helped his wife after she suffered a stroke by organising a sporting event that generated thousands of pounds for charity.

Barry Warren and his society, All-Fore-One, organised a sponsored golf day which raised £3,500 for the Headway charity that has supported his wife, Diana.

The national organisation, which has a day care centre in Stourport, provides support and services to people who have suffered brain injuries, their families and carers.

Mr Warren explained how the organisation helped all his family after "life changed dramatically" when his wife suffered the stroke in 2003.

He said: "I don't think that I could cope without the people at Headway. My wife now attends the centre at least once a week and it has helped to give her some freedom and independence.

"The group have also helped my youngest daughter come to terms with and accept the situation because she did find it difficult at first," he added.

Keen artist, Mrs Warren, 45, and her husband have two children, 19-year-old Hannah and Gemma, 21.

Mrs Warren is now a member of the centre's art club and has also been invited to join its choir.

Her husband intends to plan similar golf days in the future to help other causes in the Wyre Forest area.

He said: "There has been so much interest in this one that we intend to carry on in the future and make it an annual event."

Chairman of Headway North Worcestershire, Sheila Underhill, praised the fund-raisers for their generosity.

She said: "We really appreciate what Mr Warren and the others have done for us because it will make a difference.

"The money will be put to use in the best way for the organisation."

Fifteen golfers took part in the tournaments held at Little Lakes Golf club in Bewdley and another in Droitwich.

A total of 26 categories were contested, with Luke Towler, 15, of YellowHammer Court, Kidderminster taking the overall prize.

Winners received their prizes at the presentation evening held at the Cookley Arms, Cookley.
