A POLICE officer was assaulted with a stun gun on a main road in Rubery during a chase with a motorist.

The attack happened just before 1.30am on Monday morning in the middle of Bristol Road South near the entrance to Great Park.

Two officers stopped a blue Rover Metro in Stone Croft Avenue. The driver of the car then ran off and one officer ran after him while the other stayed with the vehicle's three passengers.

The driver ran via Chapelfield Road to Bristol Road South where he attacked the police officer with the stun gun. Following a struggle the second officer re-joined his colleague and the offender was arrested. Both the officer and the offender were taken to Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, for medical attention.

Det Sgt Mark Bissett, from Bromsgrove police, said that although the officer was not expected to have any long-term injuries they were treating the incident very seriously and a full investigation had been launched.

The stunning device, which was seized, is currently being tested.

The offender, a 26-year-old Birmingham man, is in custody at Redditch station helping police with their inquiries. The three passengers from the car ran off as the officer with them went to help his colleague.

Det Sgt Bissett said: "We know that a member of the public, believed to be a taxi driver, assisted the officer before his colleague reached him and we hope to speak with this man later.

"However the smallest detail can often make a big difference to an investigation and we would urge anyone who saw or heard anything that might be connected to the incident to give us a call."
