WITH reference to Mr John Cunliff's letter (Advertiser, June 8) I believe I may be one of the ex-Action for Droitwich members he is referring to and I would like to point out that AFD's aim at the time was to stop the dreadful Waitrose building being built on the site of our town's major car park.

Tesco had offered to build a superstore with petrol station and 500 car parking spaces on the Kidderminster Road site, which would have served our town well and attracted visitors from far and wide.

I am in no way politically motivated, but let me point out who stopped the proposal, who pulled down our beautiful Worcestershire Hotel, who wrecked our market hall and who announced the demolition of our cherished Lido. Answer: Wychavon District Council.

May I also remind you that it was the people of Droitwich Spa who called for the Parish Poll, at a public meeting which I had the honour to chair, and it is a result of the 93 per cent yes vote achieved at the poll that our town council has called for consultation between SALT, Wychavon District Council, The Civic Society and other interested parties in order that our Lido may be saved.

So you see, Mr Cunliff, SALT is capitalising on the poll result, is moving on in a positive and proactive way and is achieving results.

I hate to see taxpayers' money being used in this way, but if the poll had not been called for, our Lido would be, by now, a 'pile of rubble'!

In conclusion, Mr Cunliff, may I suggest that rather than criticise people's motives for helping out on such important town issues, you might like to come along to our next SALT meeting and possibly offer your support to the very hard work we are all doing.
