AN outraged parent fears a child will be killed in his Worcestershire village before anything is done to slow down traffic.

Kurt Tarrach says he is horrified that county highways chiefs have vetoed calls for traffic calming measures in Callow End, near Worcester.

On Monday, the Worcester News reported how Worcester-shire County Council claimed the budget for special signs, which flash up the speed you are driving in a bid to make drivers slow down, was too limited and must only go in areas with a history of high accident rates.

"Does that mean we need a fatality before anything is done?" asked Mr Tarrach.

"Would the council suddenly find the money if someone died?" Mr Tarrach, who lives at the Powick end of Callow End, on the main Upton Road, said traffic goes through the village far too fast, often heading for the Three Counties Showground.

"The Showground is a great asset to the area, but it invites a lot of people who don't know where they are going and they are all in such a hurry," he said.

County councillor Tom Wells, who originally made the call for traffic calming measures in the area, said he was not prepared to see a child killed before any action was taken.

"I am not going to let this rest," he said. "I will investigate whether we can raise the necessary funding within our community, as they have in Welland, where they've raised more than £3,000."
