KEY figures in the Droitwich community have welcomed the latest plans for the town's lido, which could see it turned into a mini-seaside resort.

The newly-formed Droitwich Spa Lido Working Group met in Droitwich on Tuesday to discuss Wychavon District Council's proposals, which would include a beach area, spa and solar-heated pool.

It comes just as the Government has rejected calls for the lido buildings to be granted listed status.

The focus of the meeting centred on whether the pool should contain salt water, how deep and what shape it should be.

A further meeting by the Save A Lido Today (SALT) group was held on Thursday to discuss the working group's initial gathering.

Mayor Councillor Richard Morris, who chaired the meeting, said: "I was very pleased with how the meeting went and the outcome achieved by all participants - there was a general consensus and, I believe, a way forward."

"All present agreed we need a speedy solution with something Droitwich Spa can be proud of in the future," he said.

The working group was set up by Droitwich Town Council following a recent parish poll on the future of the lido and comprises representatives of the town council, district council, Save A Lido Today and Droitwich Spa Civic Society.

The district council's executive committee is set to discuss the lido's future on Tuesday.
