ORGANISERS of Bewdley Carnival said it was all systems go for Saturday after a volunteer crisis almost put the skids on the event.

Residents from throughout Wyre Forest have been invited to join in the fun as the carnival takes a step closer to its 40th birthday.

The carnival's committee had warned the event might be cancelled this year because of a lack of volunteers.

Its appeal for help, however, saw new supporters come forward and the committee was gearing up for carnival day.

Committee secretary, Angie Pitt, said: "It has been a lot easier this year. We are hoping for a good turnout and for good weather."

The celebrations will start with a bang when fireworks erupt over Severnside North tomorrow night at about 10.15pm.

Floats should make their way to Hales Park, at its junction with Cleobury Road, by midday on Saturday.

They will be judged at 12.30pm and leave at 1.30pm. The floats will be led through the town by the carnival princesses and are due to arrive at the carnival site at Bewdley Leisure Centre in Stourport Road for 2.30pm.

Youngsters have been invited to go in fancy dress to the carnival site and costumes will be judged at 2.45pm.

Along with the usual array of stalls and hot food there will be dancing displays, a clown, a magician, falconry and a tug-of-war to entertain visitors.

A penalty shootout and quad bike enclosure will also be set up for the carnival.
