PLANS for a Tardis-style superloo in a Stourport conservation area have come under fire from a town councillor.

Conservative member, David Little, branded the proposal - discussed at a recent Stourport Town Council meeting - as "outrageous".

The scheme was highlighted in a consultative letter from Wyre Forest District Council to the town council last week.

It explained the viability of putting an automatic convenience outside the old post office was being considered.

As well as the town council, several other organisations were also being consulted.

Councillor Little said: "I think it is an outrageous idea. We do know that another toilet in this part of town is essential but to suggest a portable loo in the middle of town is absolutely disgraceful.

"This was the only option given to us - all the council can afford is a superloo. You get them at railway stations, not in Georgian towns.

"That is all the money we have for Stourport. We are the poor relation once again. A brick toilet block, that's what we want in a town the size of Stourport.

He added: "I didn't go along with it. A lot of people didn't. We were appalled about putting a superloo in Stourport - it is supposed to be a conservation area."

Labour district councillor, Jamie Shaw, also disagreed with the proposal. He said: "It seems to me a very cheap solution. It is very out of character with the area.

"It is unacceptable because the materials from which it would be constructed, and its design, would be inappropriate in a conservation area."

He said an automatic toilet would not be popular with residents as not many people used the one in Raven Street. "They are scared of them and worry that they will open when they are using them," he explained.

He added that a proper review of the public toilets was still on the agenda and would be conducted.

Andrew Dickens, head of cultural, leisure and commercial services at Wyre Forest District Council, said: "Stourport Forum contacted Wyre Forest District Council and asked the authority to look at installing an automatic toilet in the town centre.

"One of their suggested sites is outside the former post office in High Street. Our investigation is in its early stages and we are consulting with Stourport Town Council."
