OWNERS of CCTV systems - including householders - in Wyre Forest are being asked to sign up to a register police say could help them in the fight against crime.

The voluntary register would enable officers to check whether cameras might contain useful information that might help them investigate particular incidents, according to West Mercia Constabulary.

The force's North Worcestershire division is helping compile a West Mercia database of CCTV systems locations, which could also assist in searches for missing people.

Acting Det Chf Insp Sean Paley said: "Many small businesses now have CCTV and householders are, increasingly, installing systems as well.

"The police are doing an excellent job in North Worcestershire but cannot be everywhere at once and the CCTV can help a lot in making us all feel safer.

"There is no requirement for owners of CCTV systems to register with the police. It is on a purely voluntary basis."

He urged owners of systems to check if they complied with the Data Protection Act.

"Whether or not they need to register with the Information Commissioner depends on the type of CCTV system and the way it is used," he explained.

"However, failure to comply with the Data Protection Act requirements could not only result in a fine but also affect the police's ability to use the CCTV images to investigate a crime and may hamper the prosecution of offenders."

To register with the police, CCTV owners can contact 01527 586360.
