An exceptional Malvern charity worker has celebrated her 90th birthday.

Audrey Jones was presented with a bouquet from Malvern Age Concern, where she has been a volunteer since its launch, 17 years ago.

Mrs Jones, whose birthday was on Monday (May 2), said: "I did various things after retiring but I got bored. I'd polished and cleaned all my furniture and wanted something to do."

She began working for Malvern Age Concern as its first base at the Montrose Hotel in Graham Road.

"It was a wooden building on stilts and it was the coldest place ever in the winter," said Mrs Jones, who came originally from Rugby.

"I worked with a lady called Hazel and we became the Thursday girls."

Mrs Jones moved with the charity to its current base on Grange Road and is now in charge of organising transport to coffee mornings, making telephone calls to residents and helping out at events.

She also makes greetings cards to raise funds and helps run the office.

"The charity is part of my life now, it keeps me going," she said, "Especially when people tell me what a wonderful service we provide.

"I really enjoy it, I chat to people and make sure they're okay. If they're a bit down, I talk to them.

Age Concern spokesman George Waugh said: "She's the mainstay of the office. She's been with us since the charity's birth and is a very valuable team member.

"She's an exceptional woman."

Mrs Jones celebrated her birthday with family and friends at her home in Church Meadow Court and enjoyed a meal at the Bear and Ragged Staff in Bransford.
