JO McFarlane finds it "amusing" (Your Letters, April 15) that the district and county councils have not demanded far more from the developers of North Site and asks "whose side are the councils on, the developers or existing residents?"

The answer, as I suspect she knows, is that they are on the residents' side. They have already secured a contribution worth £1 million in measures that should improve traffic-flow substantially. To try and extract more by withholding planning permission would be to risk an expensive legal challenge and a massive bill for Malvern's Council Tax-payers, because, whether Mrs McFarlane likes it or not, the courts do not support unlimited demands by councils.

There are further steps we could take but, in thinking of a relief-road from Grit Lane to Townsend Way, she should be aware that very many people would be appalled at the idea of eating up more of the green countryside between Malvern and Worcester.
