I AM writing with regard to the article (Malvern Gazette, April 22) that requested support for the planning application for a housing development in Halfkey Road.

I was completely bemused by how public spirited Mr Gilbert Brook, of Alfrick, would appear to be. His only interest is, of course, to provide extra housing to reduce the waiting list. Does this mean he is not looking for personal gain and is going to donate the land?

Of course not! He is interested in making a large profit and does not even live in Malvern.

If, as the article suggests, North Site will only reduce the waiting list by 200 out of a potential 1,200, then it is misleading to suggest this development would clear the remaining waiting list. Would it have any impact at all?

What is meant by the term affordable housing? This term is bandied about without clarification or transparency but is used to give priority to building proposals and therefore increase the value of the land.

I have a son who cannot afford to buy or rent in Malvern. He and his fiance would be one of those on the bottom of the list and hit hard by second home owners buying for a weekend retreat, reducing the available housing stock and inflating prices. If my son supported Mr Brook, would this increase his chance of a home in Malvern? I think not!

MRS T CUTHBERT, Halfkey Road, Malvern.
