A FAMILY'S pet bull terrier has been brazenly snatched, leaving its owners devastated and fearing it may have been stolen to order because of its rarity.

Gemma, a red Staffordshire bull terrier, was seen being led away on Thursday afternoon when she escaped from her owner Liz Kortbeek's house in Hampton Close, Woodrow.

A neighbour caught the eight-month-old pedigree but was then approached by a man aged about 18 who said he knew who the dog belonged to.

The neighbour believed him and handed her over on a red lead and she has not been seen since.

Redditch dog warden Julie Edmonds said Staffordshire bull terriers had been known to be stolen for illegal dog fights and there had been a spate of dog thefts nationwide in recent months.

Mrs Kortbeek said: "My children are heartbroken. We've had her since she was a puppy and she's a lovely dog. She's very friendly and will go to anyone.

"I can't believe someone would just make off with a dog but of course, red Staffordshire bull terriers are a very sought-after breed. It's just evil."

The man who took Gemma was with two youths aged about 14 or 15. The dog is chipped and spayed and wearing a collar with Mrs Kortbeek's telephone number.

Police confirmed the dog had been reported stolen and the family has put up a £100 reward for its return. Anyone with information can call Redditch police on 08457 444888.
