SOON, 646 newly elected or re-elected MPs will be deciding policy for the next five years. I am writing to urge the 250,000-plus residents of park homes to use this opportunity to carry on the fight to reform a mini-world in which extortion, misrepresentation and intimidation are rife partly because it is, in terms of law, a grey area.

In 2004 a start was made. The Housing Act, applying to England and Wales and likely to be followed by similar legislation in Scotland, included sections laying down rules for the benefit of interested parties.

Measures were also instituted to stop park owners from pushing home owners into selling their homes to the park owners at derisory prices for resale at massive ones. The age of homes is no longer to be used as an excuse for insistence on the removal of them and their owners from parks.

These reforms are only a start and might take time to become effective but a long journey always begins with a single step. So, whatever the result of the General Election, residents should write to their MPs with suggestions for further steps.

MPs could put such residents in touch with one another. Residents who are not members of national residents' associations should consider joining one. There are three - the Park Home Residents' Action Alliance (Tel 01902 373462 or 01902 374987), the National Association of Park Home Residents (Tel 01492 535677) and the Independent Park Home Advisory Service (PO Box 665, York, YO30 2WT). All are on the internet.
