HAVING now been able to attend a performance at the newly opened Artrix I would like to congratulate all concerned in providing such a wonderful venue for the people of Bromsgrove.
Bromsgrove Arts Association was formed in 1986 primarily to work for an arts centre. After many failed projects, in 1998 we were delighted that Bromsgrove District Council, supported by all political parties, commissioned designs (on which the present building is based) from award-winning architect Glenn Howells. His ideas, helped by input from many arts organisations, have provided Bromsgrove with what must turn out to be a huge success story.
The performing space itself is splendid for music, with excellent acoustics; the seating is comfortable and sight-lines are good in all parts of the attractive hall. The foyer is large enough for all 300 in the audience to chat and enjoy interval drinks. Parking behind Artrix is generous and there is easy access from the by-pass.
Early accusations of elitism are clearly totally unfounded - the current programme includes a good mix of professional and local shows, and there is something for everyone. There are showings of six top-class films, a NEW College production of The Jungle Book, Me and My Girl from Bromsgrove Operatic Society and The Pied Piper from All and Sundry, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, a string quartet & tea party, and a BBC Shakespeare in Schools event. And this is just in the first three months before Artrix really gets going in the autumn!
