Midland Combination Premier Division

SPARTAK completed a successful season on a high with two spectacular goals on Bank Holiday Monday.

Strikes from Chris Hanson and captain Zahoor Suliman made sure Spartak completed the Midland Combination Premier Division with a win.

Manager GJ Singh was pleased with the performance, despite having to motivate his side in an unorthodox way. He said: "I told the players we still needed the points to secure fifth place - even though we didn't. Thankfully they hadn't been working out the points before."

Singh's side were trailing to a third minute goal, but Hanson's volley levelled the scores.

Suliman then made sure of maximum points when he finished off a well worked training ground move.

The manager is hoping his side can build on a successful first season in the Premier Division by aiming for the championship next season.

After only one defeat in 16 league games Spartak sealed fifth place.

Singh said: "I said before Christmas fifth was our main target and that's were we finished.

"But we've beaten some of the best teams in the division along the way and I think we could be aiming higher next season.

"The players have proved they can beat any team in this division so next season we have to break into the top four."

The manager is set to keep most of the squad, which did so well this campaign and only strengthen in one or two areas.

Singh said: "I will want to freshen things up a bit, but overall I'm happy with the squad."
