A NEW cycle path, which has had a bumpy ride in terms of publicity, is now in the news once again - because it is giving riders themselves an unsteady journey.

The surface of the two-mile path, linking Nunnery Wood High School and Worcester Sixth Form College with the Norton roundabout in St Peter's, is being raised by weeds according to a city cyclist.

The Worcester News has previously reported complaints that it was a waste of money and is never used. Its construction - which started in January - hit the headlines as it caused traffic chaos.

Now cyclist John Biddle has complained lumps have already formed along the route, making it dangerous to ride.

"On Monday I noticed how lumpy the surface was," said the Toronto Close resident.

"It looked like weeds were coming through and raising the tarmac. It made it difficult to ride on there and also dangerous as you had to watch the path and not where you were going."

The path was completed in March at a cost of around £142,000, of which £70,000 came from the Department of Transport.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said the authority was looking into complaints about the route.

"Last November, we were named the best authority in the West Midlands for its commitment to cycling," he said.
