TODAY, a devoted couple celebrate a marriage which has been as strong and lasting as their anniversary metal - platinum.

Since being married 70 years ago at Worcester Register Office, Charles and Edith Teague have only been separated by war.

The happy couple met under the arches on Tolladine Road when Edith was just 16.

She was walking home with her sister when Charles cycled past. He wolf-whistled at her and asked if she wanted a lift - she accepted.

Their quiet wedding day was the foundation of a long future marriage - Charles, now 91, and Edith, aged 88, went to the pictures at the Gaumont Cinema on Foregate Street and then out for a meal.

They had three children, and are now proud grandparents to 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grand children and a great-great grandchild.

The only time they have been apart was when Charles served with the Worcestershire Regiment in Burma, from 1945 to 1947, during which time Edith wrote to him every day.

"They are a wonderful example of a happy marriage," said granddaughter Helen Fletcher.

"They have always been totally devoted and looked after each other."

The couple who live in Battenhall, plan to mark their anniversary in similar fashion to their wedding day with a quiet meal - this time with close family included.
