ENOCH Powell once said: "All political careers end in failure!" Among the experiences acquired during 64 years of voluntary service, in a number of different roles, is that there is power and also influence. Of the two, the latter is the most effective. The pen is mightier than the sword.

The present system of so-called Local Government, is among other defects, conducive to cronyism and corruption.

I was first elected to Redditch Urban District Council in 1972, when voluntary public service was an integral part of life, local councils having real decision-making powers in those days.

Now we have "career politicians", the politically well-connected receiving fat salaries.

During my years of service to the community, I have received a lot of satisfaction, not least from case-work. I would like to thank all - especially, the electorate - who made this possible.
