MALVERN Concert Club has high hopes of another noteworthy concert on Thursday, March 3, when Alice Neary (cello) and Gretel Dowdeswell (piano) perform at the Forum.

The duo first performed for the club back in 1999 as part of its Young Artists series, which left members with a very positive view of the pair's potential, which has been borne out by their subsequent careers.

Alice Neary has performed with most of the world's leading orchestras and won many awards.

To mark the 250th anniversary of Bach's death, she gave a series of concerts in London which included all Bach's suites.

Gretel Dowdeswell is a founder-member of the Gould Piano Trio, of which Alice is also a member, and has performed throughout the world, winning major competitions.

The duo have devised a most attractive programme for the club, which should ensure a large audience. It includes the Beethoven Sonata in F Op5 No1, one of two written for King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia in 1796.

Britten's Third Suite for Solo Cello was written for his cellist friend; its nine short movements evoke Russian folk songs and hymns.

Janek's Pohdka (Fairy Tale) is based on the same Russian fairytale as Stravinski's Firebird and was written in the same year, 1910.

This revised version from 1923 is characteristic of the composer's style.

Chopin's Cello Sonata in G minor was his last major work and his only mature ensemble work.

The concert is at 7.30pm and tickets (£14, £13, £5) are available from the box office on 01684 892277.
