TRADERS in Evesham have welcomed plans for the return of the town's post office to the High Street.

Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff was told of the proposals in a letter from Simon Smith, retail line manager for the Post Office Ltd, who said that with the imminent closure of the Co-op store - where the post office is now situated - it would have to quit the shopping centre.

"Our main reason for supporting this move is to safeguard Post Office services in the area," said Mr Smith.

"The move would also enable us to enhance existing facilities and if the move goes ahead customers will benefit from on-street parking, a full range of Post Office products within a new, modern, open plan style branch."

There is to be a consultation with customers before a final decision is made. If the move does go ahead, it is expected to take place at the end of April.

"We have been working hard to find a new venue and the former premises proved to be the best option in terms of relocation," said Post Office spokeswoman Sue Dakin.

"The franchise still exists between the Co-op and the Post Office and the Co-op will continue to run the service in the High Street premises."

Mr Luff added: "It looks to me as though the Post Office is treating Evesham as it should have been treated all along. I am sure the excellent staff will welcome the move back wholeheartedly."

John Stych, chairman of the Vale of Evesham Commerce and Tourism Association said: "It should never have moved in the first place. The vast majority will be delighted it is coming back to its original place. I am sure it will improve trade in the High Street and so will be welcomed by traders."

The original fight against the move of the post office from High Street was led by councillors Jo Sandalls and Roma Kirke.

"What a shot in the arm for the regeneration of High Street," said Coun Sandalls.
